Today she killed Karoline. Didn't she? This book is a psychological first person journey within the mind of Anne. A very unique yet intriguing stroll of how she perceives herself, how she believes others perceive themselves, and how it all went wrong. But where did it go wrong, exactly? Does she really know? And though we know at the beginning of the book what Karoline's cause of death is, we do not know how it happened, we can only surmise from hints. The death of Karoline puts Anne into a tailspin, one she doesn't know how to stop, and probably one in which she doesn't know if she wants to stop. Past, present and future all seem to be intertwined. When she finds a box of letters written by Karoline but purportedly written by Anne she begins a journey of discovery and madness. Most importantly, she must begin to discover herself and this is one thing she can do, though not without Karoline's hatred following her. She must have a true acknowledgment of self both good and bad in order to become her true self.
Finding her family is the first step to recovery from the depth of her self reproach. The journey is one of bewilderment and danger, loss of friendship and self. Who is really writing the diary? Is it Karoline or is it Anne? Why does her family, long unknown to her, call Karoline the "other Anne?" Why didn't Karoline, her 'best' friend tell Anne about her family? But fulfillment is ahead as Anne begins to learn her family history, bond with her very ill mother and her siblings. There is so much she doesn't know and must learn as quickly as possible or her whole life may come tumbling down again. This book was written in a compelling manner. I found myself drawn in more the more I read. Life is never all it seems and truth is not always easy to seek, find, or accept. I fell in love with Anne and her family as well as the acceptance it brought. Catherine Astolfo has created a fine-tuned instrument that brings music to heal the soul.

Sweet Karoline Catherine Astolfo 9781927792070 Books Reviews
Admittedly, I was a little iffy when I first started reading. The first few chapters were a little disjointed and all over the place. But it grabbed me and I kept reading. Some parts were a little hard to follow but I had to keep reading to find out what happened to Karoline. I loved all the twists and turns along the way. There was never a time where I thought knew exactly what was going to happen. I love that in a book. Anne is an interesting character and I loved reading about her struggle to accept Ice Queen Anne and the Anne she wanted to be. Characterization is a big deal to me and to see how Anne went from in the beginning of the book, to the end was fantastic.
The only issue I had with this book is that it's hard to follow sometimes. I wasn't completely sure about the timeline, but it didn't stop me from enjoying it. As a fast reader and a lot of down time, I can read about two or three books a week and I can say this is one of the better books I've read in the last few months.
[SPOILER]I hate putting spoilers but I felt like I needed to touch on one theme in particular. As a birth mother, I appreciate greatly how the issue of adoption was handled. Keeping secrets, especially as one as big as a person's idenity, is dangerous. I loved that Anne connected with her birth family, and while there was still some resentment, she was able to accept her adopted parents into her life. Adoption is usually portrayed horribly in media and I appreciate how it was handled. [/END SPOILER]
Sweet Karoline kept me interested and on my toes. The epilouge tied everything together nicely but still left you wondering how things really happened. It's a great book and I would recommend it to anyone. I am definitely going to check out what other books this author has written.
Quick summary is as followed I really liked the beginning, but got a little bored thereafter, then I really liked it again. Then, it bogged down with family stuff, and then really got interesting again,. I thought the near ending was unbelievable as to who brought down the bad man, and who were the rest of them. Really won't say too much about all the sugar sweetness at the end, but it does leave us with a couple of questions that I'm not totally sure about which way I was to take the ending. I took it that Some people are later missing, never to be seen again and I wondered why, Mmmm! Is that significant, and am I to take it that way? And, be sure to pay attention to that diary business as you read!
All in all, I rated it a four, as it was a great plot, and I thought the characters were believable. History and heritage are always fun to read, as long as a mystery entwines along with it. I save my five star rating for multi storied novels that blend in the end, as I think it's more difficult to keep separate stories going and weave it together. But, good job, good story, and I did enjoy it for the most part.
Astolfo is one of the most subtle and patient storytellers that I have ever encountered. This book is like a movie you have to see at least few times to understand its deeper nuances. Even the most careful reader will want to reflect afterwards, to go back and investigate its many layers. Sweet Karoline embodies a storetelling style that is often overlooked by the 21st century, one that we should hold onto for dear life. Take your time and savor this book's human insight, vivid description, singular history, and intriguingly complicated characters ... or you'll owe this articulate, intelligent author an apology.
Thank you Astolfo, for your preternatural patience in delicately weaving mystery and suspense into an original, haunting story, for the deliciously dark peeks into the human soul, and for an overall twist that further lifts this novel well above mediocrity.
