William Tecumseh Sherman of Civil War Fame ( some would say of infamy) wrote his Autobiography, published it, and then revised it ten years later and published it once again. It's a long one. I have read over 1000 pages and have covered fewer than 10% of the whole. There is more to General Sherman than was told to us in our high school U. S. History class. I am amazed at the scope and integrity of Sherman's character. So far, I have covered his childhood, his Ohio boyhood, (the history of his ancestors who settled in Ohio), his West Point years which very much shaped his character, and his early years as a Quarter Master for the U.S. Army. I have read about his military experiences in Florida (chasing the Seminoles, the Southern States, and an Ocean Voyage from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific en route to California. The most colorful people abound in this narrative. Fremont, for instance, who decides that he is in control of California, and the Generals be damned! Sherman becomes an Aide de Camp to the Generals. He names all sorts of people. He is sent to Sutter's Mill to give a report back to the brass. Soldiers are deserting because their monthly pay is less than a night's lodging. Sherman is sent to bring them back before the deserters reach the gold mines where the gold miners will hide and protect them! Sherman and crew catch all but one deserter and take them back to headquarters. This is better than Indiana Jones! I am nowhere near to the Civil War. When I finish this autobiography, I will probably read it again for the sheer pleasure of the adventures.Product details

Memoirs of General William T Sherman William Tecumseh Sherman 9781174631726 Books Reviews
A brilliant autobiography of a controversial man. It's as fascinating for the window he opens into antebellum America, the gold rush , the teetering unstable system of banking before the Fed centralized it, the nuance of characters etc as it is for the famous campaigns that determined the outcome of the civil war and the fate of the USA.
Sherman had no political ambitions and little concern for how he was perceived up to a point, so he pulls no punches in his writing anymore than in his strategy of total war for rapid peace. In this way it is even more compelling of a read than Grant's classic autobiography (though that is packed with stunning moments and brilliant perspective.)
The language is pretty direct and it's not a challenging read. Sherman's voice is worth hearing highly recommended
I am an 18 year old who is graduating high school soon and like to think of myself as a history buff. I ordered both the memoirs of General Sherman and General Grant after reading Walter Borneman's "The Admirals" and Joseph Persico's "Roosevelt's Centurions". After reading these I developed an interest in biographies and memoirs. As much as I take pride in being able to read pretty dry material I expect to be entertained. At the beginning of the book, during sherman's tour in Florida and before, I wondered if I would finish. During the first voyage to California however, I became hooked and the book has been very enjoyable ever since. Sherman's role in the vigilance committee period as well as his tenure at the Louisiana military academy were unknown to me before and was very interesting. The relationship between Sherman and Grant was amusing as he basically refuses to say a word against him. The actual March to the sea is only covered in about 50 pages, showing that Sherman himself attached much less importance to this campaign than the rest of the country. What is most interesting to me is how I was taught that Sherman was a terrible racist and while one has to account for the fact that it was the 19th century, he seemed to treat the freed slaves with respect and praised their work in the "pioneer" units. The maps are not of the best quality, and one has to keep in mind that this is his viewpoint and there are many others. I am coming towards the end of the book and I have been reading it for such a time that I feel like I'm leaving a friend. My opinion of General Sherman has only increased while reading and recommend all history buffs read it.
